To Read if You’re Feeling Swept Away by Impulses or Intrusive Thoughts:

Everyday I will drift away,

several times a day.

When I’m feeling lost, I can let my impulses be my anchors,

or I can anchor to my values.

When I anchor to impulses, I give impulses power over me.

When I anchor to my values,

I get to be who I say I am.

My values are: (Example: To be kind to myself and kind to others.)

When I know what my values are, I can make choices based on my values.

Any choice I make, even the tiniest action based on my values, strengthens my relationship to my values, and builds trust with myself.

Here is one choice I can make based on my values: (Example: To make art and then share it with someone.)

Whenever I give my impulses the values test, these impulses will always fail. Because impulses will never be aligned with my values.

I don’t need to be perfect.

I only need to remember,

that I am so much more than my impulses.

That even when random thoughts and ideas and sensations hook my attention, either in the world or in the world of my mind, they mean nothing about who I am, unless I choose to make them mean something about who I am.

Whenever I notice my attention being pulled away, and I make the effort

to anchor to the values I have chosen,

I will never be lost.

I will always be right here where I am, knowing what’s important to me

And knowing I deserve to appreciate myself for being the amazing, bright, and observant human being that I am.
